WORLD SUICIDE AWARENESS DAY:
Step by Step for Change this Suicide Awareness Day Team’s story
Wednesday 10th September is World Suicide Awareness Day.
Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK, with 11 men dying every day. Separation and family
breakdown significantly increase the risk, particularly for fathers.
The charity Both Parents Matter supports separated parents through emotional and practical challenges, helping to reduce this risk. Before receiving support, 40% of dads reported suicidal thoughts; afterwards, 65% felt better emotionally and 80% more confident in managing their situation.
On 10 September, CEO Sam Morfey and Chair Paul O’Callaghan walked 11 miles through London—from
Parliament Square to the Royal Courts of Justice—to raise awareness and funds. They also delivered a petition to 10
Downing Street, highlighting how family breakdown, loss of child contact, and the family court process can drive men into crisis.
The charity urges public support for its work, aiming to save lives, promote shared parenting, and ensure no family
faces separation alone.
